---

Our Oracle Database [integration](https://docs.newrelic.com/docs/integrations/host-integrations/getting-started/introduction-host-integrations) collects key performance metrics on databases, tablespaces, and memory by default. You can customize your configuration to collect even more metrics, giving you detailed characterization of database performance.

Read on to install the integration, and to see what data we collect.

## Compatibility and requirements [#comp-req]

Our integration is compatible with Oracle Database from versions 11.2 to 23.

Before installing the integration, make sure that you meet the following requirements:

- A Linux distribution that is [supported by the New Relic infrastructure agent](https://docs.newrelic.com/docs/infrastructure/new-relic-infrastructure/getting-started/compatibility-requirements-new-relic-infrastructure).
    > #### ⚠️ IMPORTANT
    >
    > RHEL, CentOS, and OEL versions prior to 7 are not supported.
- [Install the infrastructure agent](https://docs.newrelic.com/docs/infrastructure/install-infrastructure-agent/get-started/install-infrastructure-agent-new-relic) if it isn't already installed on your host.
- Install the [Oracle Instant Client](http://www.Oracle.com/technetwork/database/database-technologies/instant-client/downloads/index.html) on the same host where the infrastructure agent is running.
- Configure the `ORACLE_HOME` environment variable for the root user to refer to the correct [Oracle database directory](https://docs.oracle.com/database/121/ADMQS/GUID-EC18C4A6-3BA5-4C14-9D76-B0DD62FEFFF2.htm#ADMQS12369).
- An Oracle database user with [both **CONNECT** and **SELECT** privileges](#enable-instance) on the required global views.
- The Oracle database listener `listener.ora` must be configured to accept remote connections. By default, Oracle Database only listens for connections on localhost.

> #### ⚠️ IMPORTANT
>
> ARM64 architecture is not supported.

## Install and activate [#install]

To install the Oracle Database integration:

1. Install [the infrastructure agent](https://docs.newrelic.com/docs/integrations/host-integrations/installation/install-infrastructure-host-integrations/#install), and replace the `INTEGRATION_FILE_NAME` variable with `nri-oracledb`.

2. Change directory to the integrations folder:
    ```shell
    cd /etc/newrelic-infra/integrations.d
    ```

3. Copy the sample configuration file:
    ```shell
    sudo cp oracledb-config.yml.sample oracledb-config.yml
    ```

4. Edit the `oracledb-config.yml` file as described in the [configuration settings](#config).

Additional notes:

- **Advanced:** It's also possible to [install the integration from a tarball file](https://docs.newrelic.com/docs/integrations/host-integrations/installation/install-host-integrations-built-new-relic#tarball). This gives you full control over the installation and configuration process.
- **On-host integrations do not automatically update.** For best results, regularly [update the integration package](https://docs.newrelic.com/docs/integrations/host-integrations/installation/update-infrastructure-host-integration-package) and [the infrastructure agent](https://docs.newrelic.com/docs/infrastructure/new-relic-infrastructure/installation/update-infrastructure-agent).

## Configuration [#configuration]

### Enabling your Oracle DB Server [#enable-instance]

In the Oracle database, execute the following statements to create a new user and assign user privileges. USERNAME and similar user-specific values must be replaced.

1. Choose which kind of database you have. For assistance with user maintenance questions, consult the [Oracle docs](https://docs.oracle.com/en/database/oracle/oracle-database/index.html) or contact your system or database administrator.

    **Standalone database (Oracle DB 12c or higher)**

    For standalone database if you use Oracle DB 12c or higher, use `ALTER SESSION` to access the database and manage users and user properties. Do not run this query if your Oracle DB version is lower than 12c.

    ````
    ALTER SESSION set "_Oracle_SCRIPT"=true;
    ```

    Use `CREATE USER` to add a new user to the database. Replace `USER_PASSWORD` with the [new user's password](https://docs.oracle.com/en/database/oracle/oracle-database/12.2/dbseg/keeping-your-oracle-database-secure.html#GUID-451679EB-8676-47E6-82A6-DF025FD65156).

    ```
    CREATE USER USERNAME IDENTIFIED BY "USER_PASSWORD";
    ```

    ````
    **Multitenant database**
    For multitenant databases, log in to the root database as an administrator. Use `CREATE USER` to add a new user to the database. Specified username will be a 'common user' and needs to be prefixed with 'c##' as recommended by Oracle. Replace `USER_PASSWORD` with the [new user's password](https://docs.oracle.com/en/database/oracle/oracle-database/12.2/dbseg/keeping-your-oracle-database-secure.html#GUID-451679EB-8676-47E6-82A6-DF025FD65156).
    ````
    CREATE USER c##USERNAME IDENTIFIED BY "USER_PASSWORD";
    ```
    Grant permission to new user to access all container objects (or specific container by mentioning PDB container name and root container name in 'CONTAINER_DATA').
    ```
    ALTER USER c##USERNAME SET CONTAINER_DATA=ALL CONTAINER=CURRENT;
    ```
    ````

2. Grant `CONNECT` privileges to the user:
    ```
    GRANT CONNECT TO USERNAME;
    ```

3. Grant `SELECT` privileges to the user on the following global views:

    -   `cdb_data_files`
    -   `cdb_pdbs`
    -   `cdb_users`
    -   `dba_users`
    -   `gv_$sysmetric`
    -   `gv_$pgastat`
    -   `gv_$instance`
    -   `gv_$filestat`
    -   `gv_$parameter`
    -   `sys.dba_data_files`
    -   `gv_$session`
    -   `gv_$sesstat`
    -   `gv_$statname`
    -   `gv_$rowcache`
    -   `gv_$sga`
    -   `gv_$sysstat`
    -   `v_$database`
    -   `gv_$librarycache`
    -   `gv_$sqlarea`
    -   `gv_$system_event`
    -   `dba_tablespaces`
    -   `gv_$session_wait`
    -   `gv_$rollstat`
    -   `v_$instance`

        Execute the following SQL statements together in one script, or individually:

        ```
        GRANT SELECT ON cdb_data_files TO USERNAME;
        GRANT SELECT ON cdb_pdbs TO USERNAME;
        GRANT SELECT ON cdb_users TO USERNAME;
        GRANT SELECT ON dba_users TO USERNAME;
        GRANT SELECT ON gv_$sysmetric TO USERNAME;
        GRANT SELECT ON gv_$pgastat TO USERNAME;
        GRANT SELECT ON gv_$instance TO USERNAME;
        GRANT SELECT ON gv_$filestat TO USERNAME;
        GRANT SELECT ON gv_$parameter TO USERNAME;
        GRANT SELECT ON sys.dba_data_files TO USERNAME;
        GRANT SELECT ON DBA_TABLESPACES TO USERNAME;
        GRANT SELECT ON DBA_TABLESPACE_USAGE_METRICS TO USERNAME;
        GRANT SELECT ON gv_$session TO USERNAME;
        GRANT SELECT ON gv_$sesstat TO USERNAME;
        GRANT SELECT ON gv_$statname TO USERNAME;
        GRANT SELECT ON gv_$rowcache TO USERNAME;
        GRANT SELECT ON gv_$sga TO USERNAME;
        GRANT SELECT ON gv_$sysstat TO USERNAME;
        GRANT SELECT ON v_$database TO USERNAME;
        GRANT SELECT ON gv_$librarycache TO USERNAME;
        GRANT SELECT ON gv_$sqlarea TO USERNAME;
        GRANT SELECT ON gv_$system_event TO USERNAME;
        GRANT SELECT ON dba_tablespaces TO USERNAME;
        GRANT SELECT ON gv_$session_wait TO USERNAME;
        GRANT SELECT ON gv_$rollstat TO USERNAME;
        GRANT SELECT ON v_$instance TO USERNAME;
        ```

    To collect PDB metrics, grant `gv$con_sysmetric` privileges by running:

    ```
    GRANT SELECT ON gv_$con_sysmetric TO USERNAME;
    ```

### Configure the integration [#config]

There are several ways to configure the integration, depending on how it was installed:

- If enabled via Amazon ECS: see [Monitor services running on ECS](https://docs.newrelic.com/docs/integrations/host-integrations/host-integrations-list/monitor-services-running-amazon-ecs).
- If installed on-host: edit the config in the integration's YAML config file, `oracledb-config.yml`.

An integration's YAML-format configuration is where you can place required login credentials and configure how data is collected. Which options you change depend on your setup and preference.

The configuration file has common settings applicable to all integrations like `interval`, `timeout`, `inventory_source`. To read all about these common settings refer to our [Configuration Format](https://docs.newrelic.com/docs/create-integrations/infrastructure-integrations-sdk/specifications/host-integrations-newer-configuration-format/#configuration-basics) document.

The values for these settings can be defined in several ways:

- Add the value directly to the configuration file. This is the most common way.
- Replace the values from environment variables using the `{{}}` notation. This requires infrastructure agent 1.14.0+. For more on this, see more on [infrastructure agent passthrough environment variables](https://docs.newrelic.com/docs/infrastructure/install-infrastructure-agent/configuration/configure-infrastructure-agent/#passthrough).
- Use secrets management to protect sensible information, such as passwords, so that it's not exposed in plain text on the configuration file. For more information, see [secrets management](https://docs.newrelic.com/docs/integrations/host-integrations/installation/secrets-management).

## Labels and custom attributes [#labels]

You can also decorate your metrics with labels. Labels allow you to add key/value pair attributes to your metrics so that you can query, filter, or group your metrics.

Even though our default sample configuration file includes examples of labels, they're optional. You can remove, modify, or add new ones.

```yml
 labels:
   env: production
   role: load_balancer
```

## Example configurations [#examples]

**Basic configuration**

This is the basic configuration used to collect metrics and inventory from your localhost. It uses default connection on port 1521. Do not forget to replace `SERVICE_NAME` and `ORACLE_HOME` with the correct values for your environment:

````yml
integrations:
  - name: nri-oracledb
    env:
      SERVICE_NAME: ORACLE
      HOSTNAME: 127.0.0.1
      PORT: 1521
      USERNAME: oracledb_user
      PASSWORD: oracledb_password
      ORACLE_HOME: /app/oracle/product/version/database
    interval: 15s
    labels:
      environment: production
    inventory_source: config/oracledb
```

````
**Basic configuration with different metric/inventory intervals**
This configuration collects metrics every 15 seconds and inventory every 60 seconds:
````yml
integrations:
  - name: nri-oracledb
    env:
      METRICS: true
      SERVICE_NAME: ORACLE
      HOSTNAME: 127.0.0.1
      PORT: 1521
      USERNAME: oracledb_user
      PASSWORD: oracledb_password
      ORACLE_HOME: /app/oracle/product/version/database
    interval: 15s
    labels:
      environment: production

  - name: nri-oracledb
    env:
      INVENTORY: true
      SERVICE_NAME: ORACLE
      HOSTNAME: 127.0.0.1
      PORT: 1521
      USERNAME: oracledb_user
      PASSWORD: oracledb_password
      ORACLE_HOME: /app/oracle/product/version/database
    interval: 60s
    labels:
      environment: production
    inventory_source: config/oracledb
```
````

**Metrics-only with extended metrics and tablespace filtering**

This configuration collects only metrics, including extended ones, filtering collection to only 2 tablespaces:

````yml
integrations:
  - name: nri-oracledb
    env:
      METRICS: true
      SERVICE_NAME: ORACLE
      HOSTNAME: 127.0.0.1
      PORT: 1521
      USERNAME: oracledb_user
      PASSWORD: oracledb_password
      ORACLE_HOME: /app/oracle/product/version/database
      TABLESPACES: '["tablespace1", "tablespace2"]'
      EXTENDED_METRICS: true
    interval: 15s
    labels:
      environment: production
```

````
**Skip metrics groups**
This configuration skips collection of some metrics by disabling some of the queries using `SKIP_METRICS_GROUPS`. The allowed list of metric groups, together with the queries and affected metrics, are listed in this [document](https://github.com/newrelic/nri-oracledb/blob/master/METRIC_GROUPS.md):
````yml
integrations:
  - name: nri-oracledb
    env:
      SERVICE_NAME: ORACLE
      HOSTNAME: 127.0.0.1
      PORT: 1521
      USERNAME: oracledb_user
      PASSWORD: oracledb_password
      ORACLE_HOME: /app/oracle/product/version/database
      SKIP_METRICS_GROUPS: '["sgauga_total_memory", "redo_log_waits"]'
    interval: 15s
    labels:
      environment: production
    inventory_source: config/oracledb
```
````

**Custom Query**

You can use custom a custom query to collect additional metrics. Custom metrics will be added, by default, to the `OracleCustomSample` event sample.

Notes:

- If you need to use multiple custom queries, remove this setting and use [`CUSTOM_METRICS_CONFIG`](#multi-custom-query) instead.
- Do not use `;` in custom SQL statements.

    ```yml
    integrations:
      - name: nri-oracledb
        env:
          METRICS: true
          SERVICE_NAME: ORACLE
          HOSTNAME: 127.0.0.1
          PORT: 1521
          USERNAME: oracledb_user
          PASSWORD: oracledb_password
          ORACLE_HOME: /app/oracle/product/version/database
          CUSTOM_METRICS_QUERY: >-
            SELECT
              'physical_reads' AS "metric_name",
              'gauge' AS "metric_type",
              SUM(PHYRDS) AS "metric_value",
              INST_ID AS "instanceID"
            FROM gv$filestat
            GROUP BY INST_ID
        interval: 15s
        labels:
          environment: production
    ```

**Multiple Custom Queries**

If you need multiple custom SQL queries, add them to `oracledb-custom-query.yml`, and reference that file on your configuration.

**NOTE**: `CUSTOM_METRICS_CONFIG` is only enabled if `CUSTOM_METRICS_QUERY` is not present.

````yml
integrations:
  - name: nri-oracledb
    env:
      METRICS: true
      SERVICE_NAME: ORACLE
      HOSTNAME: 127.0.0.1
      PORT: 1521
      USERNAME: oracledb_user
      PASSWORD: oracledb_password
      ORACLE_HOME: /app/oracle/product/version/database
      CUSTOM_METRICS_CONFIG: 'C:\path\to\oracledb-custom-query.yml'
    interval: 15s
    labels:
      environment: production
```

Here's an example `oracledb-custom-query.yml`.

```yml
queries:
  # Metric names are set to the column names in the query results
  - query: >-
      SELECT
        SUM(stat.gets) AS "gets",
        SUM(stat.waits) AS "waits",
        SUM(stat.waits)/SUM(stat.gets) AS "ratio",
        inst.inst_id
      FROM GV$ROLLSTAT stat, GV$INSTANCE inst
      WHERE stat.inst_id=inst.inst_id
      GROUP BY inst.inst_id
    # If not set explicitly here, metric type will default to
    # 'gauge' for numbers and 'attribute' for strings
    metric_types:
      gets: gauge
    # If unset, sample_name defaults to OracleCustomSample
    sample_name: MyCustomSample
```

## Find and use data [#find-and-use]

To find your integration data in New Relic, go to **[one.newrelic.com > All capabilities](https://one.newrelic.com/all-capabilities) > Infrastructure > Third-party services** and select one of the Oracle Database integration links.

Oracle Database data is attached to the following [event types](https://docs.newrelic.com/docs/using-new-relic/welcome-new-relic/getting-started/glossary#event):

-   `OracleDatabaseSample`
-   `OracleTablespaceSample`

For more on how to find and use your data, see [Understand integration data](https://docs.newrelic.com/docs/infrastructure/integrations/find-use-infrastructure-integration-data).

## Metric data [#metrics]

The Oracle Database integration collects the following metric data attributes. Each metric name is prefixed with a category indicator and a period, such as `disk.` or `memory.`.

### Database metrics [#database-metric]

These attributes can be found by querying the `OracleDatabaseSample` event type.

## Troubleshooting [#troubleshoot]

Troubleshooting tips:

**The Oracle library cannot be loaded**

If monitoring remotely, install the [Oracle Instant Client](https://www.oracle.com/technetwork/topics/linuxx86-64soft-092277.html) and follow the instructions on how to add `libclntsh.so` to the shared library search path.

If monitoring from the box with Oracle Database installed, install the [Oracle Instant Client](https://www.oracle.com/technetwork/topics/linuxx86-64soft-092277.html) and add the path `ORACLE_HOME/lib` to the `ldconfig` search path.

**`ORACLE_HOME` is not set correctly**

This error will appear in the logs as `[ERR] ORA-01284: Error while trying to retrieve text for error`.

To avoid this error make sure `ORACLE_HOME` is set correctly for the agent process. The agent runs as root, so its environment is not the same as the oracle user.

To verify this setting, execute `cat /proc/$(pgrep newrelic-infra)/environ` to print out the environment variables for the infrastructure process, the output should include `ORACLE_HOME` if configured correctly.

**I get an `ORA` error**

To resolve errors of the type `ORA`, refer to [Oracle's error list](https://docs.oracle.com/en/database/oracle/oracle-database/18/errmg/).
